See Who’s Talking About Health Literacy

In the last two weeks, two of the most prominent U.S. health officials addressed the importance of health literacy in achieving the Nation’s health objectives.

In a blog about minority health progress, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell said that “If we want health equity, we need to make health literacy a priority. That’s why HHS has launched a campaign to bring people from ‘Coverage to Care,’ to connect people to the care they need; teach them how to understand their benefits and their bills; and give them the tools to make healthier decisions.” Read the full post.

Ten days later, newly sworn in U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy said he will “combat misinformation with clear communication. Whether e-cigarettes or the latest diet fad, marijuana or the measles, we will give the American people the best information so they can make good decisions for their own health.” Read Dr. Murthy’s full remarks.

Many people say if only senior leaders would speak up about the importance of health literacy, then we would make progress. Now that Secretary Burwell and Surgeon General Murthy have spoken up, how will you use their support to make progress in your organization and community? Please use the comments section to share what you’ll do.
